BRAIN HEALTH PROTOCOL

Multivitamin (click this link for options) the Cosmos mind trial (and others) have shown a clear benefit to preserving cognition with a multivitamin.
All the multivitamin options listed contain more than adequate B vitamins.

Turmeric inflammation is a risk factor for cognitive declineTheracurmin – a form of curcumin with anti-inflammatory properties has been shown to absorb 27 fold higher than standard curcumin powders was used in a double blind randomized placebo controlled trial over 18 months.

There was improvement in cognitive scores, mood and less accumulation of proteins (tau & amyloid) in the brain associated with Alzheimer’s.  This is a product I take and have used extensively in my practice – there have been few tolerance issues.  Patients and I have noticed fewer “aches & pains.”

Lutein/Zeaxanthin The relationship between lutein and zeaxanthin and visual and cognitive health throughout the lifespan is compelling. Lutein is the predominant carotenoid (antioxidant) in brain tissue. Lutein 12 mg/day and DHA 800 mg/day improved cognitive scores in women 60-80 years of age over 4 months. A meta-analysis hints that lutein helps to preserve cognitive function.

Pycnogenol pycnogenol is derived from French Maritime Pine (Pinus pinaster) – some forms on the market are derived from other species – the products listed below are all derived from French Maritime Pine.
Pycnogenol has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. It has been found to be effective for multiple conditions: Memory, knee osteoarthritis, tinnitus (ringing in the ears), leg swelling from venous insufficiency and Raynaud’s phenomenon.
Pycnogenol 150 mg daily for 3 months was shown to improve memory in patients 60-85 years old in a double blinded placebo controlled trial.
A preliminary study in students ages 18-27 showed pycnogenol supplementation improved sustained attention, memory, executive functions and mood ratings in the students.

Omega 3’s data has been mixed with omega 3s regarding age related cognitive decline. I still recommend it due to its anti-inflammatory effects and other benefits.
